Jo’s love for horses and passion for the sport of riding began at an early age. Jo started riding while she was still very young and was competing by the age of seven. She rode ponies, children’s and junior hunters, equitation, and in jumper divisions. Jo graduated high school a year early to dedicate herself to riding full time under the tutelage of Olympian Kevin Freeman. She rode and trained for Kevin and helped managed his top show jumping barn; competing with Kevin’s and client’s horses up to the level of FEI rated Grand Prix’s. Kevin remains a mentor and a close friend with whom Jo works on a regular basis. After riding for over a year with Kevin, Jo decided to continue her education.

Jo has a degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry from Oregon State University. She rode professionally throughout college; but also studied abroad, volunteered, and was part of Oregon State University’s Honors College. Following graduation, Jo returned to training full time for a top hunter/jumper barn in the Northwest. In 2012 Jo started her own business, Lionheart Training LLC, named after her beloved gelding Leo.

Jo continuously strives to better herself, participating in lessons and clinics with renowned horsemen such as Kevin Freeman, George Morris, Rich Fellers, and Jeff Cook. Jo also has experience in Eventing and Dressage. She is the daughter of two reputable veterinarians and has been a veterinary technician herself. Jo loves to teach, and her focus is on safety and fun both at home and at competitions.
